Two neighbouring facilities with different jobs
Asheville Humane Society has worked in North Carolina since 1984 as an independent local nonprofit. The Buncombe County Animal Shelter and the adjacent Adoption Center perform different roles. The shelter receives animals needing intake, while all animals offered through the Adoption Center come from that county shelter. Knowing the distinction helps visitors reach the right team.
A first conversation through the Pet Help Center
The Pet Help Center serves as the county shelter’s community support and intake team. It helps with lost animals, food and basic supplies, rehoming questions and referrals for behaviour or affordable veterinary resources. No income documents are required to discuss a situation, although individual services may have eligibility conditions or limited funding.
When a family cannot keep its pet
Owners begin with a surrender request so staff can understand the situation and discuss appropriate options. Sometimes practical support makes it possible to keep an animal at home; other situations require surrender. The organisation manages those admissions by appointment because space and resources are limited. Asking for help does not automatically mean an immediate shelter admission.
Care beyond food and a kennel
The organisation uses the Five Domains framework, considering nutrition, surroundings, health, behaviour and mental experiences. Its behaviour team works on difficulties that may prevent adoption, sometimes over weeks or months. A relocation programme also sends animals to partner organisations elsewhere in the country, creating another route to placement and helping maintain local intake capacity.
Choosing the right service
The Pet Help Center is separate from Buncombe County Animal Crimes and Animal Control. It does not investigate cruelty, dangerous-animal incidents or bites, and it does not handle injured wildlife calls. Use the official help page to identify the appropriate service. For adoption, fostering or support with an owned pet, the organisation provides separate starting points. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
