A changing mission with a long history
Ape Action Africa began in 1996 as the Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund, initially improving conditions for primates at Mvog-Betsi Zoo in Yaoundé. The organisation adopted its current name in 2009 as its work expanded. Today, its Mefou forest sanctuary responds to the lasting consequences of the bushmeat and illegal pet trades.
Recovery starts with the individual animal
Orphaned and injured primates may arrive very young, malnourished or in urgent need of treatment. The team provides veterinary care and specialised nutrition before gradually introducing recovering animals to others of their own species. This sequence connects physical recovery with rebuilding social relationships, rather than viewing medical treatment as the whole rehabilitation process.
Forest enclosures support a lifelong commitment
The sanctuary provides secure, forested environments for gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys. Caregivers, including people from neighbouring communities, support the residents each day. The organisation describes rescue as a lifelong commitment. That matters for understanding its role: a return to wild living is not promised for every animal reaching the sanctuary after captivity or injury.
Individual histories make long-term care visible
The organisation’s dated 2026 stories follow Parry the gorilla through specialist surgery and recovery before returning to the sanctuary forest. Another account describes Shufai’s life after an arm amputation, including his role in a gorilla group. These are individual histories, not guarantees of identical outcomes, and show why veterinary and social care may continue for years.
Schools and villages are part of the work
Nature clubs, school visits, tree planting and creative activities bring conservation education to children and neighbouring communities. Visitors can also learn about the residents at Mefou. Check access directly before travelling: the official visitor page notes that rain or emergency procedures can close the sanctuary at short notice. Sponsorship and donations provide alternatives for people unable to visit. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
