Animal Care in Egypt

Egypt - Luxor - Luxor

Animal Care in Egypt provides free veterinary care in Luxor, combining treatment for working animals with washing facilities, farriery and school education.

Washing facilities were the first response

Animal Care in Egypt, or ACE, grew from Kim Taylor and Julie Wartenberg’s concern for working horses and donkeys in Luxor. They noticed painful sores where tack rubbed against dirty, sweaty skin. The first facilities were washing blocks where owners could clean their animals. ACE has worked in Luxor since July 2000, developing that practical beginning into wider care.

A legacy made a veterinary hospital possible

Early fundraising allowed the charity to employ local veterinarians, but its space and equipment were limited. A legacy later enabled the purchase of land and construction of a veterinary hospital. The hospital provides free treatment for animals in need, while washing facilities, sand pits, farriery and dentistry remain part of the work described in its history.

Owners learn while their animals receive treatment

ACE’s education programme connects clinical treatment with conversations about everyday care. When an injury has been left too long or an animal has suffered through poor handling, veterinarians explain what happened and how a similar problem might be prevented. This gives the owner a role beyond bringing an animal to hospital and collecting it after treatment.

Children see the classroom lesson in the stables

School groups learn that animals feel pain and need respectful care, then visit the stables to understand the hospital’s work. The organisation describes using these encounters to explain how injuries can be avoided at home. Its education account includes children who brought their donkey when a sore was beginning, connecting a classroom message with a practical decision to seek help.

Clinical volunteering supports the local team

Veterinarians, veterinary nurses and students can enquire about volunteering with ACE. The organisation describes on-site accommodation for overseas participants, with programme details available through its volunteer channel. Donations and wish-list support also contribute to hospital work. Visitors and prospective volunteers should use their respective official information so the planned visit fits the team’s clinical and educational activities.
