A rescue project on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast
Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary began in 2014 as a small response to wildlife affected by human development. From a few enclosures and a small team, it developed facilities for treatment, nursery care, research and education. Its central purpose remains helping injured, orphaned or displaced animals regain a place in their natural habitat whenever possible.
A clinic and nursery for different stages of care
The veterinary centre has surgical equipment and diagnostic tools, while a specialist nursery includes incubators for young animals. These facilities address different needs within the same rescue process. An injured adult may need clinical treatment, whereas an orphan also needs the support required to grow before its prospects for release can be assessed.
Why some residents need a permanent sanctuary
Not every rescued animal can safely return to the wild. Alturas explains that many of its long-term residents were previously kept as illegal pets. The sanctuary provides care suited to their species while the wider organisation continues to prioritise release. Permanent residence and rehabilitation towards release are therefore distinct parts of its work.
Research continues beyond the clinic
Camera traps on properties in the surrounding area help study local biodiversity. A separate post-release monitoring programme assesses how rehabilitated animals fare after returning to natural habitats. Alturas also supports student research and collaborations with other organisations. These projects make the period after release part of the conservation story, rather than treating departure as its conclusion.
Education and practical daily support
School visits, seminars and workshops bring conservation education into the community. Volunteers contribute through food preparation, collecting wild foods, enrichment and maintenance; interns support veterinary, sanctuary and orphan-care teams. The official programme pages explain these roles. Prospective participants should discuss current requirements with Alturas, especially for placements involving clinical work or animal care.
